Apparently this is being released this week, may have already been released at Dan Murphys who were allocated 2200 bottles nationwide. Seems like it might be around $50 a bottle. I doubt I will be getting any and I doubt we would be getting any in Toowoomba anyway. Would be interested in hearing from anyone who gets or samples it though. Brewed with the yeast they found in a bottle of beer from a shipwreck.
It appears to be bottle conditioned but I would guess the bottle conditioning is from a different more common strain of yeast.

Milking it for all it's worth, that's for sure.. my bet is that Malt Shovel will throw in a bunch of spec malts w/ woody or oak notes and assume people will attribute that to the yeast

I'm mates with a local Dan's employee, he said it goes on the shelf tomorrow morning but he could get me one now - pfft too expensive for a total unknown beer. If it came to light they bottle conditioned with the same strain - there will be lots of yeast trading here soon

The advertising I’ve seen for it is very slick. It’s sure to sell like hot cakes and the majority of those buying won’t be discerning enough to judge between ingredients of malt or yeast. All reasons why I’ll be trying to get my hands on a bottle or two.

Lot's of people buying that "special gift" Oh did anyone get to taste this at the Sydney GABS ?

I went to gabs, stood in the queue for 10 min, then thought 'fuck it, I'm not going to get involved in the marketing' and then moved on.

Why would yeast recovered from a ship wreck be any good, or more to that why would it be anything like it was originally? Milking a gimmick totally but its pretty cool in the geeking world of brewing. I wont be getting my Dad one of these he would rather a standard type of my home brew or a plain old Crowny or VB.
$50 a bottle I doubt I'll get me one either. If its really good I don't think it will have much to do with the yeast.
Again cool in the sense of geeking out though. I think I will probably have to buy one.

I was fortunate to taste a few beers brewed with this yeast by a homebrewer who happened to work in the same lab as I was. One of my colleagues was involved in isolating the yeast from that sample. Once they got just a sacc strain, it was a lot like a Belgian yeast, more phenols than esters. The original sample was a mix of funk. Once management figured out what was happening this was a no no but I suspect said brewer still has the strain in his collection.

Of interest to me on multiple levels.

This is the JS press release but I remember ABC stories prior. www.jamessquire.com.au/news/the-story-behind-the-wreck/David Thurrowgood used to work in vic at the same place as me and we're in a similar line of work (his experience in conservation vastly trumps mine and we are in different specialisations). Two niche areas of knowledge combined certainly piqued my interest though. $50 for a JS beer on the other hand makes baby jesus cut himself.

For posterity? Maby, for those so inclined, and assuming you can harvest the yeast from the bottle. Fifty bucks for a Malt Shovel beer when something like Rogue XS Imperial Stout goes similar coin ? Yeah, but..nah..
