I've noticed a couple of brewers here have mentioned they're using a SmartPid in their breweries, How do they compare to PID's? do you use a lot of the inbuilt features? I see the next release is due soon and when comparing prices to buying separate PID's with programmable steps, timers, SSR's and all the additional wiring and extra space, the SmartPid looks to be the clear winner. Anyway, just interested as to how these things are performing. It would be good to get Davide over here as well.
Thanks guys, the AHB thread is where I first became aware of the SmartPid, I’ve since joined the FB page and mailing list (Davide’s automated mini malt house looks interesting .) Good to hear some positive feedback on these units.
Checked it out and yes looks great from a tradie point of view. Has PID autotune so is easy to get good results. PID being proportional, integral and derivative can be set independently IF you know what you are doing. So unless you have experience I suggest auto tune or fuzzy logic if that's available. I'm in the market for a controller myself and this one is not bad. But I'm tending towards an Omron unit as I have more experience and can utilise a industrial version better for my application and future expansion.

Can someone confirm for me please, with your smartpid, if you create a recipe and begin the process, once you've reached mash in temp and the 'malt added' prompt appears, does your heating element power on with 100% output?
My set up is a 4V HERMS.
I had this happen to me this morning, whilst I was still asleep. I had set the delay function so I would wake up to mash in temp, but I awoke to a HEX boiling it's tits off and subsequently a dried fried element.
This could've caused a fire.. not happy.
So first thing this morning I bought a new element and tested the above and sure enough the element went full power.
This is the first brew after updating the software to the latest and I don't know which way to think at the moment.
I have contacted Davide, so awaiting a reply..
Good news is that I pushed thru with brew today and hit all my numbers, so happy with that.
Just bummed about what's happening and bummed about having to watch my smartpid 'cos I don't trust it.
Half the reason for buying it was to take advantage of the automation side of things..

Sorry I got mixed up, I'm having a lot of instances where my device freezes and needs to be reset, this is a hardware problem, Davide has relayed back to me that a couple of other units are experiencing the same issue.
But for the add malt prompt, changing in the HW setup in the menus where you have your temp sensor int/ext, will change what happens with the heating.
For me I had to change mine from external to internal as I found a bug in the system so Davide suggested to change to internal.
